The Defiant-chapter 2-Last Rites
Page 1:
Lettering:"September 1st 1939,Santander Prison Spain
Frame 1:
Sean Reagan  stares blankly ahead a bayonet scar runs down the left hand side of his face ,he has faced moments like this time and time again  only this time there is no reprise no outside chance and no redemption.
Father Kurtz:(out of picture) "Through this holy unction.."

frame 2:
A firing squad of Spanish Fascist soldiers aim there rifles,
Father Kurtz:(still out of picture)"And Through the greatness of his mercy.."


Frame 3:

In a panel resembling Goyas famous work  "Third of May 1808",except Reagan cannot raise hands as they are tied together Kurtz stands by Reagans side in full priest robes except he wears an Iron Cross with pride he too is scarred like Reagan except on the right side of his face, the cuts are in the shape of a red cross
he continues the last rites.The Spaniards take aim in the prison yard.

Father Kurtz:"May God pardon thee whatever sins thou has commited.."

Frame 4:
Reagan sneers at the priest and interupts him halfway through his speech

Father Kurtz" by evil use of sight.."

Sean Reagan" Ahh shut your cake hole padre your not a proper priest just look at you"

Frame 5:
The Commanding officerof the firing squad  raises his hand to command his troops to fire

Spanish Officer:"Preparado.apuntar.."

Sean Reagan"Fascist Gobshite"

Frame 6:
The officer and his men are interupted by some distant shouting  as a car pulls up behind them and a fedora wearing man calls out to them
Helmut Ellhoff: "Halt"

The Houses of Parliment
Neville Chamberlin:"Are we really ready for all this Edward"
Frame 8:
Neville Chamberlin and Lord Halifax walk down the corridors of power that are Westminster as they prepare for a session in the house of Commons.
Lord Halifax:"With the loss of Churchill it is too soon to say , but by George he was right about Germany"

Frame 9:
close up of Chamberlin
Neville Chamberlin" If word gets out about these rumors he was killed by nazi agents we could have not just war but revalution to contend with"
Frame 10:
Lord Halifax opens the door into the House of Commons for the Prime Minister
Lord Halifax:"Lets stick to the offical story Prime Minister Heart Failure, which is true no matter how you look at it"

Frame 10:
back at the prison camp in Spain.
Helmut Ellhoff produces documents to the officer who looks somewhat perplexed .  The firing squad have lowered there weapons

Helmut Ellhoff:"Brigadeer Reagan is to return with us to Berlin under instructions from The Fuhrer himself"
Spanish Officer :Que?"

Frame 11:

Father Kurtz interupts the Abwehr man he protests at what he's hearing

Father Kurtz:"I must object , this man is a communist war criminal and must be executed"
Sean Reagan:"Communist? Pah!,,I'm an anarchist for a start "
Father Kurtz"This man is the Anti Christ!"

Frame 12: Ellhoff has spotted the priests Iron Cross and inspects it he is curious..

Helmut Ellhoff:"The Iron Cross Father? you see action"

Father Kurtz:"I was at Verdun, although for the last few years I fought alongside my comrades here in Spain"

Helmut Elhoff:"As a fellow countryman then you must realise that handing over Reagan to us is of the greatest importance"

Frame 14:

Inside the Houses of parliment,in the house of commons ,The Prime Minister Neville Chamberlin is halfway through a speech his cronies sorround him Churchill is noticebly absent

Neville Chamberlin :"Early this morning the German Chancellor issued a proclamation to the German Army which indicated that he was about to attack Poland
frame 15:
Stukas dive bombing a polish village civilans are blown to bits they are helpless.There Homes are on fire  People of all ages run from the brutal attack

Neville Chamberlin lettering:"Information which has reached his majestys government in the united kingdom and the french government indicates that attacks on the polish towns are proceeding.

Frame 16:
back in the house of commons Chamberlin continues his speech

Chamberlin:"In these circumstances it appears to the governments of the united kingdom and france that by there action.."

Frame 17:
Westerplatte,scene of the first major battle  on Polish soil  the German dreadnought battleship Schleswig-Holstein bombards the polish postions along the coast, huge explosions flower around the polish garrison

Chamberlin(lettering):"..the German Government have created conditions namely an aggressive act of force against against Poland,

Frame 18:

Polish Troops clash with Kreigsmarine  holding there postion  behind them red and white sentry box the fighting is fierce but it looks like the poles even with  all the shells raining down on them , have the upperhand over the german marines .

Chamberlin:(lettering)"threatning the independance of Poland which call for the implemention  by the government of the United Kingdom and France Of the undertaking to Poland to come to her assistance .

Frame 19:
Reagan shuffles of passing the  prison walls in the distance Father Kurtz and spanish officer behind Reagan are two german secret service officers, Reagan is now fully dressed with hat covering his balding head and a waistcoat, he has been granted his freedom, but for what he wonders?
Sean Reagan:"Auf Wiedersehen Padre see you in hell !"

Frame 20:

Reagan stands by the Germans car hand on chin he looks enquistly at his new saviours/jailers?  Elhoff  just stares blankly at him

Sean Reagan:" Whats this all about Jerry?"

Helmut Elhoff:" All in good time Herr Reagan"

Frame 21:

The Germans Agents car crosses the French /Spanish border the landscape in beautiful

Sean Reagan:"Ahh C'mon give us a clue?"

Helmut Elhoff:" Lets just say we'll be needing Brigadeer Ryans and  your assistance.."

Frame 21:

The back of the car Reagan sits as Helmut points gun at him  trying to be vague as possible to his prisoner

Helmut Elhoff"We'll tell you more when we reach Paris .."

Frame 22:" close up of Elhoff smiling a wicked grin

Helmutt:"You must forgive me Irlander but I can't give too much away ...theres a war on!"

Frame 23:
A Stuka half way through a death defying dive below some wagons,horses and polish citizens trying the flee from the fighting


Frame 24:

A Polish figher(A PZL P.11) intercepts shredding the dive bomber to pieces.

Stuka Pilot:"AIIEERGH!"

frame 25: Close up of  Kaptain  Janek Redisz  half grimacing half grinning..

Janek Redisz:"Third today .. if only I could land this thing somewhere"

frame 26: Side view of Janeks plane flying past the refugees who cheer at the sight of the plane.. in the distance the Stuka plummits downward in a fiery ball.

Janek Redisz:"Planes low on fuel  I'll land in that field over there"

Frame 27:

Panzers advance through the yellow golden fields like grey hulking monsters Panzer Grenadier Troopers  also  advance  Janeks plane  can be seen far in the distance

Neville Chamberlin(lettering):"We have no quarrel with the german people, except the allow themselves to be governed by a Nazi Government."

Frame 28:

Chamberlin  continues with his speech in the house of commons.

Neville Chamberlin:"As long as that Government exisits and pursues the methods it so persistently followed in the last two years.."

Frame 29:

The Tanks Shell Polish Calvary man who bravely charge towards the armour horses and men are blown to smithereens as there attack is haltered by superior fire power

Neville Chamberlin:(lettering): "there will be no peace in Europe"

frame 30:

Janeks Plane touches down on a  flat piece of earth but not far from the fighting in the distance smoke from where the cavalary and panzers battle can be seen

Janek Redisz:"Easy does it girl"

Frame 31:


Paris a typical French cafe Reagan sits with Helmut Elhoff and the driver  things seem quite normal just three guys sharing a drink in Frances capital, but all is not quite as it seems.in the backgroundwhite bloused  waitresses wait.

Sean Reagan:"So Helmut, whats your game , you promised to tell me"

Helmut:"Well Herr Reagan your interests lay in the liberation  of your homeland?"

Frame 32:

Sean  raise his glass of whiskey to his lips, its been a while since he's had a drink and he's all too happy for it

Sean Reagan:" Well it was, but now after my time in Spain I'm uncertain"

Frame 33:
lengthways view of table  and the three men talking , the driver drains his lager, its been a long journey Helmut points towards a nonchalant Reagan  who just leans back on his chair, happy just to be in a picturesque envioriment

Helmut Elhoff" Uncertain?  you  confuse me Brigadeer Reagan"

Sean Reagan:" Lets just say I doubt conflict holds any answers any more Fritz, look how it ended up for the spanish people"

Frame 34: The driver  motions to a blonde waitress who looks somewhat familar (if you read chapter one) she takes his order

The Driver:"Two more lagers Mademoiselle and a double whiskey "

Frame 35:
Helmut fails to understand  Reagans attitude, but he still has Reagan as his captive close up of the German .

Helmut Elhoff: "Well perhaps when you reach Berlin perhaps you will be more certain"

Frame 36:

The Waitress returns with a tray of drinks  and a smile , the three men are  most thankful.

Helmut Elhoff: "Merci my dear, I propose a toast "

Page 7:

Frame 37:

Helmut and The Driver raise there glasses to toast but Reagan won't join in . The Waitress walks off as he does

Helmut:"To Victory in Europe as our valliant troops begin there crusade!"


Frame 38: The two Nazis sink there beers .. Reagan looks at them as if there mad.

Sean Reagan"May I propose a toast gentlemen"

Frame 39:
Reagan with a wicked grin across his battle hardened face raises his whiskey glass

Sean Reagan"Heres to the death of Fascists and all there ilk!"

Frame 40:

The two germans collapse in a fit knock over there glasses off the table they both look very ill Reagan looks on in amused bewilderment

Sean Reagan "You boys have taken me quite litrally by the looks of it?"

Frame 41:

The Blonde Waitress reappears she gestures to Reagan to follow her..Reagan is not sure what the hells going on.

Lady Ice (disguised as waitress)"Follow Me Reagan before there friends arrive"


Frame 42:

Sean follows the waitress up some steep steps out on the paris streets

Sean Reagan"Gasp!* slow down missy ,I'm not as young as I look"

Lady Ice:"Hurry !"

Frame 43:

Janeks plane has come to a stand still he  walks away fom plane without his flight helmet

Janek: "Well your out of juice guess i'll have to walk from here"


Frame 44:

Back view of Janek walks through the hay field away fom the smoke

Frame 45:

Same image  except Janek is further up the path

Frame 46:

Janek comes to a halt and raises his hands a rifle barrel that is protruding from the hay is pressed against his head .

Black Brigade soldier: "Halt!"

Frame 47:

Janek hands  still raised close up , two leather  trench coated soldiers emerge from the hay  wearing what appears to be the famillar shape of a german helmet
point there weapons at the pilot.

Black Brigade soldier: "Keep them raised flyboy"

Janek:"Your Polish is very good soldier.."


Frame 48:

Black Brigade soldier laughs and puts gun down his comrade does likewise  Janek hands still raised looks at the soldier wondering why they've lowered there weapons

Black Brigade soldier" ha ha its the uniform,it always confuses people "

2nd Black Brigade soldier "We're with the 10th Cavalary Brigade comrade "

Frame 49:

The three Poles walk away from the smoke in landscape, Janek has lowered his hands.

"Janek Redisz: "Ahh I see The Black Brigade ,motorised infantry that means you can get me back to an airstrip"

Black Brigade Soldier: "We'll see flyboy we've been cut off too, They've caught everyone off guard

Frame 50:
The Eiffel Tower night time great view of Paris, A speech bubble appears from near the top.

Sean Reagan"So whens your boyfriend turning up Catalina"

Frame 51:

Sean and the Waitress(Catalina AKA Lady Ice) stare out over the view of the city

Catalina(Lady Ice): "He's not my boyfriend Mr Reagan we just work together besides he's married "

Frame 52:
Close up of Catalina explaining.. shadows behind her


Catalina(Lady Ice): "Fact of the matter you weren't alone in Spain, Major Powell and I served there too"


Frame 53: side view of Catalina  listening to  Seans response  front view of Sean

Sean Reagan:"so you secret agents were hob nobbing with francos boys?"

Catalina:"No we exchanged fire"

Frame 54: Catalina again the shadow behind her  taken a more human form

Catalina(Lady Ice)" We fought against the fascists as it was in our better interests"


Frame 55:
a nasty looking ginger haired  toothy trenchcoated man emerges from the shadows he clutchs a long dagger which glistens in the night
he  is just behind Catalina who seems unaware of his presence she carries on talking

Catalina"I won't go into detail I'll let The Maj.."

Sean Reagan :"Cat..!"

Frame 56:

Catalina swings around and lets a shot out of her welrod mk1(an silenced pistol)

Frame 57:

The Assassin falls from the eiffel tower a bullet wound gaping from his chest as he falls what seems like an endless fall.

Page 10:

Frame 58:
But this is not the end of the duos problems as another plain clothed Nazi has set upon Sean  grabs Sean from behind putting his hand over
the Irish mercenaries mouth  in his hand a dagger.Catalina tries to reload her Welrod..but things look grim

Frame 59:
Sean Judo throws the abWher agent over his shoulder whose hat goes flying the germans takes a hard knock

SFX: kRUNK!"

frame 60:
But the Nazi's game isn't up  just yet and with a fanactical grin produces a luger which he points directly at Reagan.

Frame 61 :

Back view of  German as he points hs pistol at a stunned Sean but heading towards him spinning through the air is A Commando dagger
which is heading in the Nazis direction.

Frame 62:

A yelp of pain comes from  the assassin as the knife strikes him in the backof his skull.

Nazi Agent:"NAARGGH!"

Frame 63:

A Bowler hatted Gentleman lights his pipe it is clear that he threw the dagger as he addresses Catalina and Sean.
this is Major Henry Powell. the body of the german slumps down dead Powells dagger has done its work


Major Powell:"Ahh Lady Ice I see that you have become acquainted with our Irish friend I see"

Frame 64:
Close up of Powell smoke resonating from his Pipe behind him Catalina staring into space..

Major Powell:"May I introduce myself Major Henry Powell Secret intellegence service .."

Frame 65: Powell puts his arm around both Catalina and Reagan (back view as they stare from the Eiffel tower) across the night sky over the the whole of Paris

Major Powell:" I and I'm sure I speak for Catalina too would be honoured if you could join us on a little trip to Poland !"

End of Chapter 2
Second chapter of alternate ww2 epic 1st September 1939 German troops have crossed Polands borders whilst in England Prime Minister Neville Chamberlin still greifing from the sudden Death of Winston Churchill prepares the United Kingdom for War-
I should get around to illustrating this story in comic strip form sometime this year , I have a few pages of Chapter 1 to complete as well as numerous other projects but I'll see if I can come up with a front cover for this script which I will upload sometime this week :arc:
